EU, Mediterranean leaders agree on joint declaration (Urgent)
Jul 13, 2008, 17:16 GMT
Paris - The leaders of the European Union and of its southern neighbours agreed Sunday to a joint declaration at a summit in Paris, diplomats said.
The breakthrough came after heads of state and government from 43 countries, among them Israel, Syria and the Palestinian territories, overcame their differences over a reference to the Middle East peace process.
The declaration accompanied the launch of a French-inspired Union of the Mediterranean, which aims to boost ties between the EU, North Africa and the Middle East.
