Madrid - Spain's highest court Thursday overturned the guilty verdicts of four of the 21 persons convicted of involvement in the Madrid train bombings that left 191 dead four years ago.

The court acquitted two Syrians, a Moroccan and a Spaniard, who were sentenced to between 5 and 12 years in October 2007 for smuggling explosives and membership of a terrorist organization.

Another Spaniard acquitted at the orginal trial was convicted at the latest hearing in the Supreme Court of providing explosives to the bombers and jailed for four years.

The court also confirmed the acquittal of Rabei Osman el-Sayed Ahmed, known as Mohammed the Egyptian, who was suspected of masterminding the March 11, 2004 attacks on four commuter trains.

The 36-year-old was acquitted of belonging to a terrorist organization because he had already been sentenced in Italy and could not be tried for the same crime twice.

Victims groups expressed disappointment at the verdict. They had argued the Italian conviction of el-Sayed, who is still serving a 10- year sentence in Milan, was not legally binding on Spain.

At the original trial, 17 Arabs and four Spaniards were found guilty and sentenced to prison terms ranging from three years to 40,000 years. Seven of the accused were acquitted.

More than 1,800 people were injured when the terrorists planted 10 bombs on packed commuter trains apparently inspired by the actions of the terrorist network al-Qaeda.

The bombers timed the simultaneous attacks to coincide with the morning rush hour. They boarded the Madrid bound trains, left sports bags on them before alighting and detonating the explosives inside the bags.

Terrorist get (should get) due process just like any other criminal.

I don't advocate any type of criminal activity ...

Terrorists need to go to jail just like child raping priests should. They are in the same league.

Unfortunately, too many catholics kill terrorists first and ask questions later, while not making a peep about a priest raping a child. That is called: DOUBLE STANDARD. It is downright cruel.

'Too many catholics kill terrorists first and ask questions later'

Erratum: That should read: Too many catholics kill muslims first and ask questions later...

Because, technically an alleged terrorist is innocent until proven guilty in the court of law, and then they become criminals ... just like child raping priests (only 1.8% of self-confessed child raping/molesting priests (about 90 out of 5,000) have ever been convicted).

So, technically about 4910 of those priests raped/molested a child but are not criminals (although engaged in activity which is criminal).

The world needs the same type of accuracy regarding terrorists activity that the U.S. court system and its grand juries made about child raping priests. Those grand juries did not kill the priests, rather they asked the questions.

No terrorist is innocent of anything.

Please tell me the mercies and laws they abide by when holding any western hostage under their control?

Correct, they show no respect for laws, they just murder because they are typical muslims acting in accordance with the koran and their founder.

Yes, the perfect example is the discovery of 2 DEAD AND KIDNAPPED US SOLDIERS who were in uniform and given no protections under the Geneva Convention you halfwit who knows ZERO of the law.

These typical muslims MURDERED US soldiers and all the terrorists we have should be shot today and than buried with pigparts from a local Cuban butchershop.

Guantanam Bay Country Club Prison should be run by a person like General Patton and than there would be no problems.

'These typical muslims MURDERED US soldiers ...'

That is a good example of how the west is destined to loose this battle through lack of confidence. With such hyperbole coming from you, as well as U.S. leaders such as the president, the U.S. public (most of whom are peaceful and smart enough) will simply cease to pay attention to their government. That is: cease even more than now to pay attention to their government. Apathy in the U.S. government runs incredibly high. Yet, with such constant hyperbole coming from the U.S. politicians apathy will get even higher. I use to wonder how great nations, such as ancient romans could fall into such a state of disrepair and then disintegrate from their greatness. I no longer wonder about it because I am experiencing it firsthand.

I don't know which to soldiers ae mentioned here but I guess the correct statement should be : 2 american soldiers in uniform were killed by ;;;Iraqi ? Afghani ?Somehow different than killed by 2 muslims, certainly more precise .Paranoia leads to the statement 'were killed by muslims ....Why not say then 'christians invaded Iraq ?It would be just as silly.Fact is this is no war from cristians or muslims ,faith has nothing ,or not much to do with it ,that is just the trumped up reason given by those that want to masquerade the real reasons.Amazing some people still refer to the invasion of Iraq in this kind of vocabulary,or the struggle between Israel and the palestinians .Such ignorance is at least stupid at most criminal .Education is failing more and more and replaced with bragging and weapon rattling .That typically happens in countries shifting investment in education to investment in armament .Could that be a comment from an american ?Where else can this sort of ignorance be found ?

Actually, the article is about these convictions being overturned and does not provide any legal explanation for it.

It's not about what soldier killed what raghead, or who is in who's nation.

It has nothing to do with education, in any country

It doesn't even have anything to di with health care, global climate change or the weather

I marvel at how, in the age of information, so little information is relayed, when it is so readily available. The other glaring ommission is that there is no by-line.

What an age, this flower child world we live in...
