sad Czech affairs- from the most recent history Czechs (perhaps Czech rulers) tried always attach themselves subserviently to anyone they've perceived as a strong power mildly interested in them;
before WW2, Czech secretly & busily built air fields to enable French 'bombers' land in Czech lands, after presumed successful raid on the German territory - during 'Protectorat'= German occupation, even Churchill bitterly complained to Benes that Czechs are even less resistant to the Germans than easy Bulgarians (today such Czech partizans may be labeled terrorists anyway);
during Russian influence after WW2, Czechoslovakia was only 'socialist block'country not having stationed there Russian armies (not until late 60ties) - just to appreciate foot licking devotion of the Czechs to the Soviet cause - well at least Soviets didn't force Czech army tp participate in Soviet venture in Afganistan, for that matter Germans didn't draft Czechs for an expansion of Reich either;
all that changed, with a fervent kiss slam of 'Amerika' by Topolanek and his administration. Czech army is 'ordered' by Americans to help their Oil-barons in Iraq or and in the very Afganistan, where before even Russians didn't want them;
subsequently a 'radar' against Iranian missiles, which do not exist, alas such 'radar' has not even proven its designed prowess, but it may be good enough to snoop on Russian military activities in Kaliningrad - the fact Russians do not like of course; well in addition such 'radar' is good enough 'trojan horse' to bring in hundreds on U.S. troops - well Russians will not twidle their thumbs , naturally and Euro arms race erupts again; pradoxically if a Czech soldier ready to sacrifice his life for a greater American empire would decide to visit the country he so dilligently fought for - he may not get a visa!
As French aristocracy repeated after submission of 'Jackerie' uprising :
'when you kick the peasant in the mouth he'll kiss your foot' - well why people vote for likes of Bush or Topolanek - that is the question?
