Immigrant boat with body on board lands on Canary Islands (Roundup)
Jul 25, 2008, 9:34 GMT
Canary Islands - A boat carrying 79 would-be immigrants and a dead body Friday crossed over from Africa to the Spanish Canary Island of La Gomera, officials said.
The boat landed on a beach in Alajero in the south of the island. Nine of the passengers were believed to be minors. One passenger was given hospital treatment for hypothermia.
The boat was the second carrying dead migrants to arrive on La Gomera this month, following a vessel with four bodies on July 11.
Thousands of undocumented immigrants have travelled by sea from Africa to Spain this year.
Thousands are believed to have died by drowning or from thirst, hunger and exposure during such crossings over the past years, with around 50 losing their lives this July alone.
