EU freezes partnership talks with Russia (Urgent)
Sep 1, 2008, 17:09 GMT
Brussels - The European Union will not hold any talks with Russia on a new partnership agreement until Moscow withdraws its troops from Georgia, EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said Monday.
'We want to have a modern partnership (with Russia),' Barroso said, adding however that any discussions on such a partnership would be 'postponed' until Russian troops return to the positions they held prior to the conflict in Georgia, as foreseen by the six-point peace plan.
The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of EU leaders in Brussels.
