Spain and UN call for dialogue on Georgia, Sahara
Sep 2, 2008, 12:39 GMT
Madrid - United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero on Tuesday called for 'constructive dialogue' to solve the Georgia conflict, with Ban expressing concern over the increasing number of displaced people in the region.
Ban met Zapatero in Madrid after visiting the World Expo in Zaragoza on Monday.
Ban declined to comment on the independence declaration of South Ossetia, saying the UN had issued several communiques on it and that member countries had individual stances on it.
Zapatero also stressed the need for new talks to solve the conflict between Morocco and the Polisario Front, which has sought the independence of Western Sahara since 1975.
Ban said he had not yet chosen a successor to Peter van Walsum, his personal envoy for Western Sahara, whose mandate has not been renewed after Polisario accused him of being pro-Moroccan.
