Spanish discotheque stages prize draw for breast augmentation
Nov 19, 2008, 13:49 GMT
Madrid - A Spanish discotheque Wednesday came under criticism for organizing a prize draw with a breast augmentation operation as the jackpot.
The draw was to be held between all the visitors who paid 20 euros (25 dollars) to enter the discotheque in the eastern city of Valencia.
The discotheque justified the draw by saying there was a lot of demand for the operation, whose worth was put at 4,500 euros. 'Most of our clients have had their breasts operated on,' a representative claimed.
Such 'repulsive' initiatives promoted a sexist image of women and aesthetic values above more important ones, regional equality official Celia Ortiz said.
Spanish Health Minister Bernat Soria said the ministry was concerned about the growing popularity of breast operations among minors.
The Valencia authorities announced legal action unless the prize draw was cancelled, and the ministry launched an investigation into the affair.
