Czech Senate okays US missile shield radar (Urgent)
Nov 27, 2008, 13:48 GMT
Prague - The Czech parliament's upper house Thursday approved treaties that allow the United States to set up a missile defence radar base in the former Soviet satellite, chamber's chairman Premysl Sobotka said.
The 81-seat Senate passed the accords in two separate 49-32 votes. The senators rejected opposition proposals to adjourn the vote or put it under a review of the country's Constitutional Court.
The US project however faces obstacles in the closely-divided lower house where the center-right government of Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek lacks clear support for it.
The treaties also require presidential approval.
