Jan 20, 2009, 12:58 GMT
Madrid - Three Spanish air force pilots were killed Tuesday in an accident involving two Mirage F-1 fighter-bomber planes, Defence Ministry sources said.
The planes, which were on exercise flights, crashed on two private properties, at a distance of 2.5 kilometres from each other, in south-eastern Albacete province.
Local officials said witnesses saw them collide in the air. Witnesses also reported an explosion, fire and smoke.
One of the planes had two and the other one pilot. The three bodies were retrieved from the wreckage. The crash did not cause further injuries or damage.
The French-made fighter-bombers had been 'modernized' recently, said the ministry, which was investigating the causes of the accident.
Thirteen Spanish air force members have been killed in accidents involving Mirage F-1 planes over the past 25 years.
