Storms cause two more deaths in Spain - thousands without power

Jan 26, 2009, 8:20 GMT

Santiago de Compostela, Spain - Stormy weather claimed two more possible victims in Spain on Monday, bringing the death toll to 14, rescue services said.

A couple was found dead in their home in Cervo on the coast of the north-western region of Galicia.

They appeared to have inhaled carbon dioxide when using an old stove after a storm had left the area without electricity, the sources said.

The two deaths brought the apparent death toll to 14 since Friday. The victims included four children who were killed in the collapse of a sports hall near Barcelona.

New storm warnings were issued for Galicia and the north-eastern region of Catalonia, where around 80,000 people remained without power.

Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said meteorologists had not predicted the proportions of the storms, making it difficult for the authorities to make adequate preparations.

In eastern Spain, firefighters brought under control two wildfires which had been fanned by winds and devastated about 1,100 hectares of forest and bush near Valencia and Alicante.
