Landslide hits central Norway but no serious injuries (Roundup)
Mar 13, 2009, 15:27 GMT
Oslo - No serious injuries were reported after a landslide hit Namsos, central Norway, on Friday impacting several buildings, police and local media said.
At least seven people were rescued from the area by helicopter. Rescue crew members winched them up to safety since debris, stones and fallen trees made accessibility very difficult.
The landslide, which took place shortly before noon, hit at least six houses and three cabins as well as some parked cars.
Several hours after the landslide police had no reports of any missing people.
Sniffer dogs were however to be deployed search the area on the outskirts of Namsos, northwest of Trondheim.
A boat and divers also skirted the area since the impacted buildings were located on the shoreline of a bay, the online edition of the regional newspaper Namdalsavisa reported.
Local authorities set up a crisis centre at a nearby school.
The accident occurred following some blasting in connection with roadworks in the area.
The landslide was roughly 150 to 200 metres wide. Some experts suggested the landslide could be linked to quick clay.
