Apr 21, 2009, 11:54 GMT
Ankara - Turkish police on Tuesday arrested 34 people suspected of links to the Islamic Jihad Union, an extremist group with links to al-Qaeda, the NTV private television station reported.
The suspects were arrested in dawn raids on homes mainly in south-eastern Turkey but also in the country's biggest city, Istanbul.
NTV said those taken into custody were suspected of belonging to the Islamic Jihad Union and that some had received explosives training at camps in Afghanistan. Police also seized a large number of weapons, ammunition and information on bomb-making.
One of those taken into custody on Tuesday was a Uzbekistan national wanted by Uzbek authorities, according to the Anadolu news agency.
A Turkish cell of al-Qaeda was blamed for carrying out the bombing of two synagogues, the British consulate and a HSBC bank in Istanbul in 2003, killing more than 60 and leaving hundreds injured.
