Germany given list of Guantanamo prisoners

Berlin - The US government has handed Germany a detailed list of the Guantanamo Bay prisoners who are expected to be released in Europe, an Interior Ministry spokesman said in Berlin Saturday.
Of the prisoners at the camp on the Cuban coast, 50 cannot be sent to their homelands because of the danger they will be tortured.
The German news magazine Der Spiegel reported Saturday up to 10 non-dangerous captives were being considered for release in Europe.
The ministry spokesman said, 'There has been a concrete request.'
Spiegel said Washington's main official dealing with the Guantanamo issue, Dan Fried, handed over the list to aides of Chancellor Angela Merkel and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Berlin last week.
Berlin officials have said in the past they would require a detailed explanation of why the prisoners should come to Germany rather than being sent home or resettled in the United States.
On Wednesday, US Attorney General Eric Holder said in Berlin that Washington hoped to release 30 Guantanamo inmates soon and was confident that European allies would participate in giving the homes.
German government ministers have been divided over whether or not to accept any inmates.
