Poisoned Vienna partygoers knew about drugs in drinks (Roundup)
May 4, 2009, 15:05 GMT
Vienna - The five young people who collapsed outside a Vienna bar knew that they had consumed drinks laced with drugs and were not secretly poisoned, their testimonies revealed on Monday.
The partygoers were admitted to hospitals Sunday in critical condition, nearly immediately after consuming the tainted drinks, but they have since recovered.
A sixth victim, a 16-year-old girl, also went to hospital Sunday after visiting the bar, but she claims she did not knowingly consume any drugs, a police spokeswoman said.
Witness reports had initially indicated that a 42-year-old suspect had secretly put a substance or a combination of drugs into the drinks he offered for free to the five partygoers, who are aged between 20 and 30.
The suspect, who has been detained, has not shed much light on the incident so far, but the three men and two women have meanwhile told police they knew their drinks were laced with drugs, the spokeswoman said.
Police were still unsure about the suspect's motive and about the exact substance or substances he used.
