Danish prince born, fifth grandchild for Queen Margrethe (2nd Roundup)
May 4, 2009, 15:17 GMT
Copenhagen - Flags were raised Monday at public buildings in Denmark after the news that Queen Margrethe II had become a grandmother for the fifth time with the birth of a prince to her younger son.
At noon, a 21-gun salute also honoured the latest member of the Danish royal family.
The queen's daughter-in-law Princess Marie, 32, gave birth to her first child early Monday with her husband, Prince Joachim, 39, at her side, the palace said, adding that mother and child were doing well.
The child was Joachim's third son. He has two from his first marriage with Hong Kong-born Alexandra Manley who he divorced in 2005.
Joachim told reporters that it was 'equally exciting and moving' to witness the birth of a child.
Late Monday afternoon, Joachim's other sons, Nikolai and Felix, accompanied their grandfather, Prince Henrik, to see the baby while the queen has yet to see her new grandchild as she was busy with state affairs.
Henrik told reporters that the whole family was 'very happy' while Felix said he was a little nervous.
Prince Joachim and his sons stand in the line of succession to the Danish throne behind the son and daughter of Joachim's brother, Crown Prince Frederik, 40, the first son of Margrethe and her husband, Prince Henrik.
Joachim married his French-born wife a year ago at a church near his estate in southern Jutland.
