Spanish judge asks US whether it will investigate Guantanamo
May 5, 2009, 13:26 GMT
Madrid - Spanish judge Eloy Velasco announced Tuesday he had asked the United States to inform him whether it was probing or intended to probe allegations of torture and other illegal practices at the prison camp in Guantanamo, Cuba.
Velasco said he needed the information in order to decide whether his National Court should investigate a complaint by a prisoners' rights group.
The group accuses former US attorney-general Alberto Gonzales and five other former officials of the George W Bush administration of setting up a system which deprived prisoners of their rights, sanctioned torture and guaranteed impunity to those responsible.
The case was earlier handled by judge Baltasar Garzon, who has now opened a separate inquiry into allegations of torture at Guantanamo.
Spain's National Court has become known for investigating alleged human rights abuses around the world.
