Anti-bullfighting campaign prospers in Spain's Catalonia
May 18, 2009, 12:38 GMT
Barcelona - The north-eastern Spanish region of Catalonia could become the first in Spain to outlaw bullfighting, campaigners against the tradition said Monday.
The anti-bullfighting platform Prou has collected 180,000 signatures asking the regional authorities to ban bullfights.
If the authenticity of the signatures is confirmed, their number is more than sufficient to oblige the regional parliament to debate the matter.
While many parties were still undecided, only the conservative People's Party (PP) was clearly in favour of bullfighting, Prou representatives said.
'We ask for coherence with the law on the protection of animals, which prohibits mistreating them in public spectacles,' with bullfights now being an exception to that rule, Prou representative Jennifer Berengueras explained.
Catalonia is known as the Spanish region least enthusiastic about bullfighting.
The Barcelona city council approved a declaration expressing its opposition to bullfights to 2004, and many municipalities have closed their bullrings.
