Finnish police probe home care worker over four murders
May 19, 2009, 15:05 GMT
Helsinki - Finnish police Tuesday said they were investigating a 58-year-old home care worker on suspicion of four murders and at least seven attempted murders.
The victims were all elderly women, a police spokesman was quoted as telling Finnish news agency STT, but declined to state the possible motive.
The alleged crimes occurred betwen 2004 and 2009 and took place at several hospitals, nursing homes and the homes of the victims in the Helsinki area.
The suspected woman has been in custody since March and has refuted the allegations.
Police were alerted about the suspect after they were informed about an elderly woman who was admitted to hospital suffering from poisoning, who had been cared for by the home care worker.
The police statement came just as a district court in Tampere sentenced a 27-year-old female nurse to life imprisonment for murder and attempted murder.
The nurse subjected a mentally disabled patient to a lethal overdose of insulin two years ago, and was suspected of the attempted murder of an eight-month old baby.
A psychiatric evaluation suggested that although the nurse was suffering from a personality disorder, she was responsible for her actions.
