Poland to get US missiles, foreign minister says
May 21, 2009, 17:16 GMT
Warsaw - Poland would receive US Patriot missiles regardless of whether the United States goes ahead with its plans for a missile defence shield on Polish soil, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said Thursday.
Sikorski said that in terms of its agreement with the US, work on the Patriot system would begin this year with a permanent garrison established by no later than 2012, according to a report by the Polish Press Agency.
'All the signals we receive from the US confirm that regardless of what the American administration decides on the missile defence base, that it will keep the accompanying agreement on Patriots in Poland,' Sikorski said.
A report by a team of US and Russial experts released Tuesday said the missile shield would not be effective against Iranian missiles and would undermine efforts at preventing the Islamic state from developing nuclear weapons.
Poland irked Russia after signing the deal with the US to place a missile shield on its soil in exchange for military aid.
Despite Washington's assurances that the system is meant for protection against so-called rogue states, Russia says its nuclear arsenal is being targeted.

OK.
It is simple. If USA build wall on mexican border and claim that wall is against Canadian we all know that that wall will not effective against Canadian but very effective from Mexican. Similarly if you put shield on Russian border that wall will be efective against Rusians but not Iranians. If you would like protection against Iraninas you should put rockets on southeast of Europe (Romania, Bulgraia,Turkey, Greece, ..) not Northeast Europe (Poland). Take look into Geography maps!
Typical POlish politics. They are again placing their destiny into the hands or a remote power. WWII indeed finished long time ago...
Maybe Venezuela could ask Russia for a missile defense system to protect their oil fields against an Iranian attack. What would be our reaction ?

The Russians on the one hand savour words like ''... said the missile shield would not be effective against Iranian missiles', but nevertheless continue to claim ''... its nuclear arsenal is being targeted.''
Umm ... if it won't defend against Iranian missiles, guess what other missile arsenals it won't defend against (ie. target)?
Drink some vodka if you need time to think that one through.
