20 hurt in anti-government clashes in Georgia (Roundup)

May 29, 2009, 9:16 GMT

Tbilisi/Moscow - Violent clashes between supporters of the opposition and police in the Georgian capital Tbilisi left 20 people injured, local media reported Friday.

The Thursday night conflict broke out after law enforcers attempted to push a crowd of demonstrators away from the parliament building, according to an RIA-Novosti news report.

Knives, clubs, and rocks were among the weapons reportedly recovered after the clashes. Five victims seeking hospital treatment were police officers, the Interfax news agency reported.

'We (the police) would like to believe that the organisers of the protests really want to express their opinions peacefully,' said Eduard Zguladze, a police spokesman. 'We (the police) defend their right to do that, but we also must defend public order.'

Edvard Dzidziguri, a leader of the opposition Conservative Party, blamed government officials for provoking the clash, and claimed there would be further incidents instigated by the administration of President Miheil Saakashvili.

'We have information that they (the Saakashvili government) are planning further provocations,' Dzidziguri said.

Nino Bourzhanadze, leader of Georgia's opposition, told RIA that anti-Saakashvili activists had cancelled a Friday protest next to the Tbilisi city council to prevent further street fighting.

Georgia's opposition has been demanding the resignation of President Mikhail Saakashvili for months, saying he is an autocrat who has concentrated too much power in his own hands since the 'Rose Revolution' of 2003 brought him to power.

Mass demonstrations have marched peacefully against Saakashvili in the Georgian capital almost daily since April.

Saakashvili has repeatedly declared he will not step down, and that he intends to serve out his term in office ending in 2012, and blamed pro-Russia forces for instigating the challenges to his mandate.

The Georgian president on Monday called into Tbilisi hundreds of para-military police to strengthen defences of government buildings.

More than 30 people were injured in early May clashes between Tbilisi city police and opposition supporters.

Saakashvili, after months of anti-government marches in late 2007, ordered a November 7 police assault on demonstrators. Riot police using water cannon, tear gas, and clubs broke up the estimated 50,000-strong crowd, hospitalising more than 500.

Georgian Army, headed by Saakashvilis have committed an act of aggression, a cowardly act of barbarism which ended in murders of innocent civilians of S. Ossetia and Abkhazia.

The despicable crimes committed by Georgian Administration against their former citizens, must not be rewarded in any shape or form. Now is the right time for US and NATO to cut all links with Georgia and isolate them as perpetrators of war crimes, and bring individuals responsible to face justice in Hague.

Tom Klan: Why don't you post comments under your real (Russian) name, such as Ivan Petrov? You talk about crimes of the Georgian administration against civilian Ossetians... Why is that Russians have never allowed any international observers into S. Ossetia to confirm those crimes???

Because the alleged crimes have never occured. The opposite has happened. It was the Russian troops along with the separatist militias who commited crimes against humanity. In Georgia's S. Ossetia in August 2008, Russia committed ethnic cleansing of the Georgian population burning thousands of homes and leaving civilians homeless and forcibly displaced. While Russia did the same in Georgia's other region Abkhazia in 1993, this time Russia did not get away unnoticed. Human Rights Watch well documented the crimes against humanity. Russia will have to pay for the crimes one way or the other.

Other questions you need to answer:

Why is that on August 8th, Russia talked about 2,000 (two thousand) killed Ossetian civilians and a few months later the Prosecutor General of Russia announced the final number of civilian deaths - 142 (one hundred fourty two)?

Russians lied about the number of casualties to justify their invasion into Georgia.

Why didn't Russia allow international representatives to verify the number of casualties?

Because the actual number of casualties was less than 50, most of whom where males between 20 and 35 years old. These casualties were among separatist militias, who cannot be considered civilian.

By the way, how many civilian casualties were in two recent Chechen wars?

Certainly more than 50, more than 142, more than 2,000, more than 20,000 thousand. The exact number of casualties is difficult to estimate, because the Western journalists and observers are not allowed into Chechnya (I wonder why not) and Russian officials never name truthful numbers. Various independent experts estimate the number of civilian casualties to be between 40,000 and 150,000, most of whom died as a result of war crimes committed by the Russian army.

Why doesn't Russia start with allowing independence to Chechnya???

Why is that the only two nations who recognized independence of S. Ossetia and Abkhazia are Russia and Nicaragua???

Not even Cuba, not even Venezuela, not even North Korea, not even Iran, not even Syria, not even Belarus, not even Kazakhstan... All nations except Russia and Nicaragua consider S. Ossetia and Abkhazia as part of Georgia!!!

There are two other nations that don't consider S. Ossetia and Abkhazia part of Georgia - these are the nation of S. Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Don’t you think that your augment based on one point that Russians are behaving slightly worse than Georgians is a very week one? You are Georgian man and should know better, It’s imprinted genetically in Georgian understanding of life,, that you are only responsible for your actions! And your Actions only! What other party have done it’s a subject of entire different conversation.

I’m not Interested for now what the Russians have done in response to Georgian assault on S.Ossetia and Russian Peace Keepers stationed there. We are talking about general behaviour and actions of the Georgian side headed by Saakashvili

You have stated in your reply, that you are willing to accept only reports published by the independent international observers. In that case, please pay attention to the reports written by Human Right Watch.

It clearly mentions following:

“Georgian forces used indiscriminate and disproportionate
force in artillery assaults on South Ossetia, and in some cases used disproportionate force in their ground assault” . Page 3

“Georgian forces beat and ill-treated at least five of the 32 Ossetians detained in August in the context of the armed conflict” Page 4

“After months of escalating tensions between Russia and Georgia and following skirmishes between Georgian and South Ossetian forces, on August 7, 2008, Georgian forces launched an artillery assault on Tskhinvali, South Ossetia’s capital, and outlying villages. Assaults by
Georgian ground and air forces followed. Page 5

****Russia’s military response began the next day, with
the declared purpose of protecting Russian peacekeepers stationed in South Ossetia and residents who had become Russian citizens in recent years***

“Human Rights Watch concluded that Georgian forces demonstrated disregard for the protection of civilians during the shelling campaign, resulting in large-scale damage to civilian objects and property, and
civilian casualties” Page 6

“Georgia’s use of multiple rocket launching systems, such as BM-21s (“Grads”) in civilian populated areas violated international humanitarian law’s principle of distinction” Page 6

I mean it goes on and on.. I’m not going to list here everything.

Are you proud of this?
