Paris robber flees with fortune in jewels
May 30, 2009, 19:36 GMT
Paris - In a daring daylight theft just steps from the French Justice Ministry in Paris, a lone robber made off with millions in jewelry Saturday without firing a shot, the France Info news agency reported.
The value of the heist was estimated at 6 million to 10 euros (8.5 million to 14.1 million dollars).
The suspect, described as around 50 years old, appeared to be just another well-heeled customer when he entered the Chopard jewelry store in the Place Vendome, an area known for luxury hotels and numerous jewelry stores.
Brandishing a pistol, the armed robber forced the store's employees to pack a bag full of jewelry. Mounted cameras were unable to capture a good image because he wore a hat. He calmly left the store on foot without attracting attention.
The robbery lasted two minutes.
Chopard, which has its roots in Switzerland, is known for selling jewelry to movie stars.
