Jun 15, 2009, 14:33 GMT
Athens - Greek firefighters battled Monday to contain a major bush fire that was quickly getting out of control near a seaside suburb of Athens.
Gale force winds were hampering efforts by three planes and two helicopters to put out the flames in the seaside suburb of Ano Glyfada.
'The fire is approaching many of the homes in the area,' said Glyfada Mayor Giannis Theodoropoulos.
Dozens of firefighters with the assistance of 15 trucks were trying to extinguish the flames which were threatening a heavily- populated area.
Thick smoke could be seen rising above the Greek capital of five million.
