"Many injured" as Georgia police clash with Saakashvili opponents
Jun 15, 2009, 16:24 GMT
Moscow/Tbilisi - A large number of people were reported injured Monday in clashes with Georgian police putting down a demonstration against President Miheil Saakashvili in Tbilisi.
Witnesses said reporters were among the injured when police waded into the mainly youthful crowds using batons. An estimated 40 people were detained.
The protesters were continuing a campaign objecting to what they say has been an increasing tendency for Saakashvili to resort to authoritarian rule.
They have long been urging Western governments to withdraw their backing for him following last summer's conflict with Russia which saw Georgia forced to renounce claims on Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which Russia has since recognised as independent states.
