German parliament criticizes Russian judiciary
Jul 3, 2009, 8:12 GMT
Berlin - The German parliament called for constitutional reform in Russia, in a bill passed late Thursday night by the lower house, or Bundestag.
A number of trials in Russia had given the impression that political influence was being exercised on courts and prosecutors, the cross-party motion stated.
German parliamentarians also expressed their worry that a trial against jailed ex-oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky, accused of embezzlement and fraud, was a means to pursue political goals.
The Bundestag members said the trial was a test case for the credibility of Russian justice under President Dimitri Medvedev.
