Hertha Berlin sign striker Wichniarek
Jul 3, 2009, 10:12 GMT
Berlin - Hertha Berlin have signed Polish striker Artur Wichniarek from relegated Arminia Bielefeld, the Bundesliga club said on Friday.
The 32-year-old has signed a two-year contract, returning to a club he played for between July 2003 and January 2006.
Hertha, who finished fourth last season to qualify for the Europa League, are reported to have paid 700,000 euros (980,000 dollars) for Wichniarek who scored 13 goals for Bielefeld last season.
His previous spell at Hertha was less successful, with only four goals in 44 appearances.
With only a modest budget for new signings, Hertha have been looking for inexpensive replacements for strikers Marko Pantelic, whose contract was not extended, and the on-loan Andriy Voronin who has returned to Liverpool.
The club's only other new signing so far for the new season is defender Christoph Janker from Hoffenheim.
