Veteran midfielder Edu released by Valencia
Jul 3, 2009, 15:35 GMT
Madrid - Spanish giants Valencia announced on Friday that the contract of veteran midfielder Edu had been rescinded 'by mutual agreement.'
This means that the Brazilian Edu, 31, is now a free agent and can join any club of his choice.
Edu, whose full name is Eduardo Cesar Daude Gaspar, told the media that 'I want to leave and Valencia want me to leave...so we have reached an agreement, and this has finished.'
He joined Valencia from Arsenal in 2005 but has not been able to build up any rythm at Mestalla because of a frustrating series of injuries, including ligament operations on both knees.
He made only 44 appearances in four seasons, scoring just one goal.
Edu added that 'I should leave here happy because it has been a phase with difficulty, but it has been a good experience.'
According to the Spanish media, he might return to Sao Paulo club Corinthians, the club where he started his career before joining Arsenal in 2001.
Cash-strapped Valencia, who finished sixth in La Liga last season, are keen to reduce their large squad and sell players off.
Last week they sold young defender Raul Albiol to Real Madrid, who are also interested in forward David Silva. Barcelona, Chelsea and several other clubs are after Valencia's star striker David Villa.
