German-made axle broke in Italy disaster, magazine says
Jul 3, 2009, 21:30 GMT
Munich - The axle of a railway tanker car which broke and set off a lethal fireball this week in an Italian coastal town was German-made, a news magazine said Friday in Munich.
Focus quoted Alberto Chiovelli, head of Italy's railway safety authority ASNF, saying that the axle had been purchased at the start of this year as a spare part from Jungenthal Waggon GmbH of Hanover, Germany.
It was attached to the wagon in March by a repair firm, Cima Riparazioni in Mantua.
The death toll from the fire in Viareggio stood Friday at 22.
