Attempted-murder charge filed against "headscarf murder" suspect
Jul 24, 2009, 10:40 GMT
Berlin - Prosecutors in Dresden said Friday that they were filing an additional charge of attempted murder against a German- Russian man who fatally stabbed an Egyptian woman in a courtroom in the city on July 1.
The attempted-murder charge relates to the husband of Marwa el- Sherbini, whose death caused outrage in her home country. El- Sherbini's husband was also stabbed in the courtroom.
'In addition to the charge of the murder of el-Sherbini, the charge of attempted murder of her husband now stands against him,' state prosecutor Christian Avenarius said.
The stabbing was dubbed 'the headscarf murder' because el- Shirbini, 31, was seeking justice against her assailant, who had insulted her for wearing a headscarf on a German city playground.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel later presented her condolences in the name of the German people to Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak.
