Brussels eyes swift end to Czech-Canada visa row
Jul 24, 2009, 11:00 GMT
Brussels - The European Union is hoping that Canada will quickly drop its demand that Czech citizens apply for visas, EU officials said after three-party talks in Brussels on Friday.
The meeting between Czech and Canadian diplomats and officials from the European Commission, the EU's executive, was 'extremely constructive' and has 'started a process which we hope will lead to a quick solution,' commission spokesman Michele Cercone said.
The row concerns Canada's decision to make Czechs apply for visas following a surge in the number of asylum applications from Roma bearers of Czech passports.
The Czech government has already retaliated by making Canadian diplomats and businessmen apply for visas, but it also wants EU member states to bring in similar measures in a show of solidarity.
The Czech foreign minister is set to raise the issue with EU counterparts at a meeting in Brussels on Monday.
But a number of EU member states are reluctant to strain ties with Canada just as the summer tourist season reaches its height.
Britain, in particular, sees Canada as a key ally both in NATO and within the Commonwealth, making it unlikely that London would impose visa requirements on its former colony.
Commission officials say that the Canadian visa requirement is unacceptable, but stress that they will not recommend retaliatory measures as long as there is a chance for dialogue.

I would just like to know where to apply for Canadian Government credits as Canadian Citizens who paid airfare and other expenses to have their immediate Mexican relatives visit for crucial family events like weddings, births, funerals, etc. only to NOT get their visas in time.
Whether Canada wishes to implement a visa or not, I don't agree with doing so, but if they do decide to do it, give some notice to the legitimate travellers who are currently eating airfare costs and vacation costs because of a hasty and arrogant decision in my view!
I'm ashamed as a Canadian of this decision without warning! I would not complain if Canada implemented visas, but they need to give legitimate people legitimate time to get paperwork done, that includes Canadians who are inviting Mexicans here to visit, which is our situation!
I think it's hard for most Canadians who don't have Czech or Mexican relatives to comprehend how emotionally devastating this is, if they did, I guarantee they would feel differently. I am a Canadian Citizen by birth, married to a dual Citizen (mexico/canada) and we are being run over by this decision financially and emotionally! Worst of all, no members of the Canadian government will address the effects this is having on it's own citizens. Mr. Jason Kenney is conveniently not answering his phone, e-mail and fax. Is that the duty of an elected public servant? I don't think so.
A visa requirement is absolutely ridiculous for Mexicans. Mexican moral and ethical standards and positions are based on Christianity, as is the case with most born Canadians. It seems to me that Mexicans are a much better fit into our society than most of the immigrants that are currently in our country who have absolutely no interest in adapting to our way of life.
Canada please wake up, check the statistics with Stats Canada, Canada receives more than $5000 Mexican tourists dollars for every $1 spent by the Canadian government processing immigrant applications and assisting Mexican refugees. This is simply a bad business decision and an insult to Mexicans that previously viewed Canada as an excellent vacation destination.
And for those of you that think these visa requirements will stop drug dealers and criminals entering the country think again, drug dealers and criminals own legitimate businesses and have sufficient assets to easily satisfy any visa requirement. This new requirement will only stop decent working Mexicans that want to vacation in Canada.

I'm a Canadian and I fully fully agree that Canadian position is insulting towards country like Czech Republic.I have some experience with Romas and they are simply people who are 'economic' refugees. More over they simply use both Canadian and Czech system to benefit while being in parasitic like situation to both countries.
Unfortunately,Canadians are not aware of what Europeans know for centuries, they see Romas as some group that is being unjustly persecuted and hence Canadian government have difficulties rejecting their application for refugee status.
There is another issue in Canada and that is MEXICAN refugee problem.
Canada needs to reject Mexican applicants as they are big burden on our social system.Rejecting European country like Czech Republic will look good like non-racial measure and thus more politically acceptable to world community.
We also have to look at real numbers. Even though they were 3000 applications from Romas since 2007,most of these application were withdrawn by the applicants. Only a small fraction actually ended up in Canada.I could see only approx. 100 applicants were eventually granted refugee status. This number should not be problem for country like Canada that accept SOMALI 'refugees' by thousands.
In conclusion I think that Canada has to clean up their immigration policy and submit an apology to Czech Republic.
