Woman killed in French bus crash
Aug 4, 2009, 11:56 GMT
Paris - A bus on its way from Germany to Portugal crashed in the south-west of France on Tuesday, killing a woman passenger and injuring 19, police said.
Most of those on board were Portuguese, but there were at least three people with German-sounding names, according to a spokesman for the bus operator, Eurolines.
Police said no other vehicle was involved in the incident, which occurred around 3 am near Bordeaux.
The Portuguese-registered bus was on its way from the southern German city of Stuttgart to Porto in the north of Portugal.
It apparently veered of the road and smashed through a central divider before coming to a halt in front of a bridge abutment, local police said.
French media said the driver, who suffered minor injuries in the crash, was being quizzed on suspicion of negligent homicide.
