Aug 12, 2009, 9:36 GMT
Moscow - The construction minister of Ingushetia, an autonomous republic in Russia's restive North Caucasus region, was shot dead on Wednesday in an attack on a government building, Russian news agency Interfax reported.
Unidentified gunmen stormed the office of Ruslan Amerkhanov in the regional capital Magas and shot the minister at point-blank range, a spokesperson told Interfax. The police are looking for the attackers.
The North Caucasus has recently seen a massive surge in violence.
In the last few weeks a number of human-rights activists were murdered, while in late June the president of Ingushetia, Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, was seriously wounded in an attack.
