Influx of illegal immigrants to Spain slows down
Aug 14, 2009, 11:47 GMT
Madrid - The number of would-be immigrants crossing from Africa to Spain went down 40 per cent in the first seven months of this year, compared to the corresponding period in 2008, the Interior Ministry said Friday.
Nearly 4,500 illegals were detained between January and July this year. The number of migrants landing on the Canary Islands declined by as much as 64 per cent.
The ministry attributed the decline to increased repatriations and maritime controls.
