Aug 27, 2009, 11:25 GMT
Athens - A Greek firefighting pilot died when his plane crashed while battling a wildfire on the Ionion island of Kefalonia on Thursday.
'I express my deepest sorrow and condolences for the loss of the pilot. He lost his life while trying to carry out a difficult task,' said Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis.
Dozens of firefighting planes have battled around the clock for days to control a three-day wildfire just east of the Greek capital that destroyed homes and thousands of hectares of forest and olive groves earlier this week.
