Immigrant boat with body arrives on Canary Islands
Aug 31, 2009, 11:52 GMT
Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain - A boat carrying four would- be immigrants and a body arrived Monday on the Canary Island of Tenerife, Spanish officials said.
The migrants were believed to be north Africans. The reason why one of them had died was not immediately known.
Dozens of Africans have drowned or died of exposure when trying to reach Spain this year.
The number of migrants detained in the Canaries, however, went down by 64 per cent to 1,798 people in the first seven months of this year, compared to the corresponding period in 2008, according to official figures.
The total number crossing from Africa to Spain declined 40 per cent to nearly 4,500 detainees.
The government and analysts attribute the drop mainly to reinforced frontier controls, repatriations and the economic crisis in Europe.
