Opposition parties barred from registering in Moscow elections
Sep 5, 2009, 17:52 GMT
Moscow - Opposition parties have vowed to appeal an election council decision Saturday that would prevent them from contesting October 11 Moscow city council elections, reported Internet news portal kasparov.ru.
'We will file a complaint before the courts,' said Olga Schorina, spokeswoman for the Solidarity Democratic Movement party. Both her party and Right Cause, another party opposed to the Kremlin, were told by voting officials that they could not register for the race because some of the signatures of support for their candidacy had been falsified.
Four incumbent parties - the Kremlin-backed United Russia, along with the Communist party, A Just Russia and the Liberal Democratic Party - are not required to register for the race. Two other parties - Yabloko and Patriots of Russia - were allowed to register candidates for the race.
The opposition parties had hoped for a good showing in Moscow, which has a relatively lively political scene by Russian standards.
