Merkel welcomes German law to ratify Lisbon Treaty (Extra)
Sep 23, 2009, 12:04 GMT
Berlin - Chancellor Angela Merkel welcomed on Wednesday the actions of German authorities to ratify the Lisbon Treaty.
Last week, the German parliament passed a law implementing the treaty. On Wednesday, Germany's highest court refused a challenge to the law, and Germany's head of state, President Horst Koehler, put his signature on the document.
'This is a major success,' said Merkel in remarks broadcast by Bavarian radio, praising the focus of both chambers of parliament on passing the amended legislation this month despite the distraction of campaigning for this month's general election.
'I am extremely satisfied,' she added. 'I put a huge amount of effort into this Lisbon Treaty and it's a happy ending to the German presidency which we exercised a while ago in the European Union.'
Germany had the presidency in the first half of 2007.
