Four held, then freed in German terrorism inquiry
Sep 30, 2009, 20:01 GMT
Munich - German police conducting an anti-terrorism inquiry briefly detained four men, all aged about 30, in Munich on Wednesday before freeing them, a senior prosecutor said.
Security has been tight in the city, where the annual Oktoberfest is under way, with 6 million visitors likely to have passed through the gates during the three-week beer festival.
Prosecutor Barbara Stockinger said three homes were searched in an inquiry into possible future criminal acts, but insufficient evidence was found, and the suspects, who all hail from Bosnia or Serbia, were freed.
She said the Munich inquiry would continue, saying police were acting without hesitation because of recent threats to disrupt Oktoberfest. She said the inquiry involved 'Islamism in the broadest possible sense.'
