Clinton to visit Moscow this month
Oct 2, 2009, 16:02 GMT
Washington - US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will travel to Russia this month for talks on negotiations between the two countries on a treaty to reduce nuclear weapons stockpiles, the State Department Friday.
Clinton will arrive in Moscow at the end of an October 9-15 trip that also includes stops in London, Dublin and Belfast to express support for the Northern Ireland peace process.
The United States and Russia have begun negotiations to replace the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), which expires at the end of this year. President Barack Obama has said he wants to reduce the levels of nuclear weapons held by each side.
Obama in September announced he was scrapping plans outlined by the preceding Bush administration to base a long-range missile defence system in Eastern Europe. Russia strongly opposed the plans, which resulted in the worst tension between the two countries since the end of the Cold War.
