Petric out for rest of year in latest Hamburg blow
Oct 6, 2009, 11:08 GMT
Hamburg - Croatia striker Mladen Petric is out for the rest of the year with an ankle injury, his German club SV Hamburg said on Tuesday.
Hamburg said that Petric will undergo surgery on Wednesday in Switzerland and will not be able to play again until the league resumes in mid-January from a winter break.
It is the latest striker blow for Hamburg, who last month lost Peru forward Paolo Guerrero for possibly six months over a ruptured cruciate knee ligament.
'That's really bad. I hope that Mladen can return as soon as possible,' said coach Bruno Labbadia.
Hamburg are running out of strikers with only Marcus Berg and teenagers Tolgay Arslan and Tunay Torun left on the squad.
Labbadia decided last week not to hire Poland's Ebi Smolarek and said Tuesday he would also not look for an additional forward after the Petric blow.
Hamburg are second in the Bundesliga, trailing Bayer Leverkusen on goal difference, with both teams meeting in Hamburg on October 17.
