Spanish police arrest Basque separatists
Oct 13, 2009, 18:56 GMT
Madrid - Police in northern Spain arrested at least six Basque separatist figures linked with the banned Batasuna party, officials disclosed Tuesday evening.
Among those arrested was separatist leader Arnoldo Otegi. The party, which is close to the banned underground separatist group ETA, was trying to hold a meeting in the northern city of San Sebastian in a bid to regroup.
Batasuna, banned six years ago, is regarded as the political wing of ETA. The 51-year-old Otegi, long the party leader, spent 15 months in prison before his release in the summer of 2008. He was sentenced for taking part in ceremonies paying tribute to past ETA terrorists.
