US sanctions German national for alleged al-Qaeda ties
Oct 15, 2009, 16:22 GMT
Washington - The United States on Thursday placed sanctions on a German citizen, accusing him of working on behalf of al-Qaeda and attempting to terrorize Germany.
The Treasury Department identified the individual as Bekkay Harrach and said he currently resides along the Afghan-Pakistani boarder, where al-Qaeda and the Taliban are waging a fight against US-led NATO forces.
'Harrach's activities are a stark reminder that al-Qaeda continues to attempt to terrorize the German people and others involved in the fight against terrorism,' said Adam Szubin, the director of the department's Office of Foreign Assets Control.
Citing German authorities, the Treasury Department said Harrach is believed to have become a member of the terrorist network since receiving training at an al-Qaeda camp and has made terrorist threats distributed in Germany.
The United Nations listed Harrach as a terrorist figure in May, requiring all member countries to take steps against him.
