At least seven die in two accidents on Majorca (1st Lead)
Oct 26, 2009, 10:48 GMT
Palma de Majorca, Spain - A total of at least seven people were killed overnight when a house collapsed and another caught fire on the Spanish holiday island of Majorca, officials said Monday.
Both accidents occurred in the island's capital Palma.
The partial collapse of a three-storey building killed five people. Four others were injured, two of them seriously.
Rescuers were searching for at least three other people who remained missing.
Some witnesses had reported an explosion in the building, but the gas company Endesa denied speculation that the accident had been caused by a gas leak.
Residents said they had lodged complaints about the deteriorated condition of the building, which was more than 50 years old.
The house collapse was the most serious in Spain so far this year.
In another part of town, a fire erupted in a building, killing two and injuring several other people.
