House collapse kills seven on Majorca (Roundup)

Palma de Majorca, Spain - At least seven people were killed when a three-storey residential building collapsed overnight on the Spanish holiday island of Majorca, officials said Monday.
Two people were also killed in a fire in another neighbourhood of the island's capital, Palma.
The death toll of the collapse rose when two more bodies were located in the rubble. The victims included at least one minor.
Two people were hospitalized for injuries. Rescuers continued searching for more eventual victims.
Some witnesses had reported an explosion in the building, but the gas company Endesa denied speculation that the accident had been caused by a gas leak.
Residents attributed the collapse to what they described as the poor state of the 50-year-old building. Officials, however, said they had received no complaints and that there was no reason to expect the house would collapse.
Authorities in Palma announced an investigation and two days of mourning.
The house collapse was the most serious in Spain so far this year.
In another part of town, a fire erupted in a building, killing two and injuring several other people. At least 53 people have been killed in fires in residential buildings in Spain this year.
