Brussels - European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso congratulated German Chancellor Angela Merkel on being re-elected to office on Wednesday, and praised the 'excellent cooperation' with Germany.
'I would like to thank you for your continuous commitment to the European idea and your active contribution to the integration of the enlarged European Union,' Barroso told the chancellor.
The commission president said the cooperation between Brussels and Berlin was key to 'let Europe and therefore also Germany emerge stronger from the current economic and financial crisis.'
Merkel was due to represent Germany's freshly appointed government at an EU summit in Brussels the following day, at which responses to the economic crisis were due to feature on the agenda.
Barroso stressed Merkel's role in negotiations.
'With your help we will succeed in building a prosperous, secure and sustainable future for all Europeans,' Barroso told the re-elected chancellor.
