Nov 1, 2009, 11:56 GMT
Moscow - The total number of protestors arrested at this weekend's anti-Kremlin demonstrations in Moscow is over 50, according to media reports Sunday.
The demonstrators had gathered on Saturday to call for respect for the country's constitution, and civil liberties, before being rounded up by special units of Russian police.
Those arrested included writer Eduard Limonov, according to the website of dissident opposition leader and ex-chess champion Garry Kasparov.
The human rights activist Lev Ponomarev accused the authorities of 'disproportionate violence' after several witnesses reported seeing protestors being pushed to the ground and dragged roughly into buses at the unauthorized demo.
The group of around 100 demonstrators in Triumph Square were surrounded by around 20 buses. Supporters said there were around 500 participants at the demonstration.
Demonstrators had shouted 'Shame' and 'Freedom' before the protest was broken up.
