Former Bulgarian premier Stanishev faces criminal investigation
Nov 3, 2009, 15:52 GMT
Sofia - Bulgarian state prosecutor Boris Velchev has asked parliament to lift the immunity of former premier Sergey Stanishev so he can be investigated in connection with missing state security files, local media reported Tuesday.
Stanishev, who led Bulgaria to European Union membership in 2007, has been opposition leader since his Socialist Party was crushed in elections four months ago.
Without immunity from prosecution, he can be investigated in connection with misplaced confidential intelligence documents. Stanishev, who was already questioned last week, said he was ready to do so and cooperate with the prosecutor.
According to the new interior minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, Stanishev failed to return two confidential documents handed to him a year ago, the Sofia News Agency said.
Stanishev faces up to five years in prison if indicted and convicted.
