Schalke teenager scores as Schalke hold Munich 1-1 (Roundup)

By John Bagratuni Nov 7, 2009, 15:36 GMT

Hamburg - Teenager Joel Matip scored in his Bundesliga debut as Schalke 04 played to a 1-1 draw at Bayern Munich on Saturday.

Matip, 18, headed home a free-kick from Lukas Schmitz shortly before halftime to cancel out Daniel van Buyten's opening goal in the latest setback for Munich.

The result leaves Munich stranded in eighth place with 20 points while Schalke are fourth with 22 points.

Bayer Leverkusen lead the way with 26 points from a 4-0 demolition of Eintracht Frankfurt on Friday. Werder Bremen and SV Hamburg are on 22 like Schalke ahead of their Sunday games against Borussia Dortmund and in Hanover, respectively.

Munich were humbled 2-0 by Girondins Bordeaux on Tuesday and face elimination in the European Champions League. Right back Philipp Lahm added to the woes by saying in a newspaper interview on Saturday that Munich lacked a philosophy and that wrong players were signed.

Munich general manager Uli Hoeness reportedly threatened the Germany defender Lahm with 'consequences' while on the pitch Munich failed to make a statement against the Schalke team of their former coach Felix Magath.

Munich got the lead in the 31st minute when van Buyten tapped home in a scramble after a free-kick from Holger Badstuber.

However, the joy lasted only 12 minutes until the defensive midfielder Matip got the the equalizer with the back of his head off Lukas Schmitz' freekick.

Arjen Robben came on as a Munich substitute in the second half but the Dutchman was lucky not to be sent off for chesting Schmitz after being fouled by the Schalke player.

Schmitz came close for Schalke after the break while Anatoly Tyomoshchuk aimed wide for the hosts in the 75th.

'We should have decided the game, we tried while Schalke tried to conserve the draw. We have to score on the few chances we get,' said Munich captain Mark van Bommel.

The youngster Matip said: 'It was a great experience. I was a little surprised that I would play, but I am happy that the coach fielded me. He told me to go out there and do my job.'

Elsewhere on Saturday, champions VfL Wolfsburg won 2-1 at TSG Hoffenheim as second-half goals from Zvejzdan Misimovic and Grafite reversed Hoffenheim's lead from Vedad Ibisevic.

Wolfsburg have 21 points and so have Mainz 05, 1-0 winners over lowly Nuremberg from Elkin Soto's 38th-minute strike.

Borussia Moenchengladbach and VfB Stuttgart produced no goals, while VfL Bochum lost the second game under new coach Heiko Herrlich, 2-1 at home against SC Freiburg from Stefan Reisinger's injury-time winner.

Bochum and Nuremberg remained in the drop zone along with bottom club Hertha Berlin, who host struggling Cologne in a third game on Sunday.
