Late penalty frustrates Hamburg

Nov 8, 2009, 15:28 GMT

Hanover, Germany - SV Hamburg failed to close the gap on leaders Bayer Leverkusen when they conceded a late penalty in a 2-2 draw at Hanover in the German Bundesliga on Sunday.

Marcell Jansen and Eljero Elia were on target for the visitors either side of a header by Didier Ya Konan.

But Jiri Stajner converted a penalty two minutes from time after he was adjudged to have been brought down in the box.

The result moves moves Hamburg to 23 points, with Leverkusen - 4-0 winners over Eintracht Frankfurt on Friday - on 26.

Werder Bremen, a point behind Hamburg, will regain second spot if they avoid defeat against visiting Borussia Dortmund in a later kick-off.

Bottom club Hertha Berlin were up against Cologne in another later game.

Jansen gave Hamburg a 15th-minute lead after feeding Elia and taking a neat return pass from the Dutchman in the box.

Ya Konan was first to the ball at the near post to head in an equalizer from a corner 11 minutes later, but Hamburg regained the lead when Elia headed in a free-kick from Piotr Trochowski in the 44th.

Hamburg were close to all three points but Stajner gained a controversial penalty when colliding with substitute Tomas Rincon in the box.
