Union members come out in droves against Italian government
Nov 14, 2009, 17:00 GMT
Rome Tens of thousands of union members and leftists took to the streets of Rome Saturday to protest the government's policies against the ongoing financial crisis
The government of Silvio Berlusconi failed to use 'the most valuable 18 months' after Berlusconi's election, meaning a change is now necessary, said Pierluigi Bersani, head of the opposition centre- left Democratic Party (PD), from the Piazza del Popolo.
The demonstration was called by the CGIL union, which is trying to build a broad workers' coalition against Berlusconi's policies. Anti- Berlusconi demonstrations until now had largely been organized by smaller unions.
