Danish fan fined for storming Euro qualifier
Nov 18, 2009, 13:36 GMT
Copenhagen - A court Wednesday ordered a Danish man who stormed onto the pitch during a Euro 2008 qualifier between Denmark and Sweden to pay 180,000 dollars to the Danish football association (DBU).
The referee abandoned the June 2007 qualifier.
'He should have considered that his actions would have some consequences,' judge Susanne Bager said.
The DBU had earlier demanded 381,000 dollars in damages, citing the economic loss it suffered and that it wanted compensation for a fine it was ordered to pay to European football's ruling body UEFA.
Bager said that was not on, citing insufficient security arrangements at the national arena in Copenhagen.
The 31-year-old man was not present in the Copenhagen district court and it was not immediately clear if he would appeal.
In December 2007, he was sentenced to a 20-day jail term.
The man, whose identity has been shielded, had earlier said his actions were fuelled by alcohol and he lost his senses when Sweden was awarded a penalty in the final minutes of the game when the teams were tied 3-3.
Sweden was awarded a 3-0 victory.
